William Lloyd Garrison gives directions concerning George Thompson's arrival in New York. He expects there to be an argument over the series of resolutions to be offered at the anniversary meeting. He refers to the decision of Congress and Attorney General Bates that African American soldiers should receive the same pay as white soldiers. Garrison discusses Mrs. Caroline Wells Dall's appeal to the Women's Loyal National League to avoid partisan politics. Garrison writes: "A tremendous conflict is now, in all probability, going on between the forces of Grant and those of Lee. I am not particularly sanguine of Grant's success."
