Letter from Oliver Johnson, New York, [N.Y.], to William Lloyd Garrison, Dec[ember] 21, 1870
Description:
Oliver Johnson writes William Lloyd Garrison to inform him that the new editor of the Independent will be Rev. Edward Eggleston, and that both Eggleston and Mr. Bowen wish that Garrison should continue to write for the paper. Johnson states that Bowen has assured him that Eggleson aims to keep the paper "as free as heretofore", and admits that the new arrangements are "quite different" from his earlier, more pessimistic expectations. Johnson assures Garrison of his esteem for and confidence in Eggleston.
