Letter from Oliver Johnson, New York, [N.Y.], to William Lloyd Garrison, Dec[ember] 30, 1870
Description:
Oliver Johnson informs William Lloyd Garrison that while he offered his resignation from his position at the Independent to Henry Chandler Bowen upon the misapprehension that the Editor-in-Chief post would be offered to Gilbert Haven, and that Bowen himself would have prefered a more "orthodox" man in his position, he nonetheless believes to have conducted himself both wisely and honorably in his actions. Johnson states that his immediate successor will be Rev. William H. Ward, and that his final day at his post will be December 31st. Johnson states that effective January 1st, 1871, he will begin his duties at the Tribune, where he will be responsible for the oversight of the Weekly edition. Johnson states that while he possesses the resources to retire comfortably to his family's farm in Pennslyvania, he does not wish to abandon his trade so long as he may still fulfill it.
