Nearly full face, hat turned a little to the left, leaning forward, dry point in hand, and looking, it is to be supposed, at his reflection in a mirror. The light falls from the right. The sitter wears a soft cloth hat with brim turned up; the crown of the hat nearly touches the top of the plate. The background is closely shaded. The right sleeve between the shoulder and elbow has been slightly lightened in part while the shadow has been deepened in others to indicate creases.
