Katherine writes to her mother with birthday wishes and sends her some money to spend on herself. She has some material for June and Betty's dresses. Katherine writes that she is disgusted with the world and with her part of the country in particular. The cost of renting a house is too high and she is surprised that anyone could afford to buy a house, yet they do. She would like to move away from a neighborhood boy named Norman because she is afraid that one day he will maim Junie. He gets scolded all of the time, but that doesn't seem to stop him. His mother is also a nuisance, always stopping by the house bothering her when she would like to have time to herself. Junie is feeding herself and is speaking, mostly made up words. Katherine saw General Balbo and his aerial armada go down the Hudson. She was able to see it all from her roof. There were also other planes and parachuters. Katherine tells of another incident with Norman biting Junie. She went to look at a house to rent six blocks away but it may be too expensive.
