Katherine writes to her sister Jan about various family members and their whereabouts. She commends Rex for writing very satisfyingly newsy letters and mentions that Donnie only writes short notes about school and Mrs. Irey writes about church and murder cases that Mr. Irey is working on. Katherine asks Jan about the new living room furniture that the Ireys' purchased for their new house. She encourages Jan to ask if she can have their old furniture for her house. Katherine wishes that she could find a nice house for even twice the price that the Ireys' are renting theirs for. Katherine writes with excitement about her upcoming trip home. She has a lot of sewing to finish before they leave. She writes about her clothing budget which doesn't seem to be enough for what she needs and lists the various items that are needed. She bought a chiffon dress for a dance which she describes in detail, but it was frivolous and won't get worn very much. The dance was at Mary Virginia Spear's studio and cost $1 per couple. Mary teaches piano and dancing from the studio which is an old carriage house behind her parents' colonial home. Katherine asks Jan about Uncle's broadcast and wants to know more information so that she can find the station. Junie has become quite a climber, getting into things and making it hard for Katherine to write letters. She writes that she feels very extravagant for having her hair washed and waved multiple times over the past month and for having a manicure for the first time. She asks if Jan has been doing any jigsaw puzzles lately and writes that she did one with marshmallows and one which featured Clara, Lu and Em from the popular radio soap opera. Katherine asks if Jan ever listens to their show.
