U.S. M1905 sword bayonet and scabbard for Springfiield 1903 rifles, WW1. "U.S. 145695" stamped on right side of ricasso, "R.I.A" stamped on left side of ricasso, over a flaming bomb, over "1909". Sword bayonet has a single edged blade with paralell edges, a short edge on the spine of the blade towards the point. The blade has deep fullers ground into each side, beginning just above the ricasso and ending a couple inches before the point. The bayonet has a steel guard and pommel, both designed to attach to the rifle (loop in the guard to go over the barrel of the rifle, groove in the pommel to engage the bayonet lug. Wooden grip secured with a single screw. There is a small button on the front edge of the handle, just under the guard, for securing the blade in the scabbard. The scabbard is wood, covered in a tightly sewn rawhide cover and fitted with a steel mouth. The steel scabbard fitting has small prongs on either side of the opening to secure the bayonet into the scabbard. The scabbard has a thick canvas protective sleeve, complete with a suspension system and leather tip protector.
