View of part of the former Shawmut Congregational Church, gutted by fire in 1978.
Description:
Chain link fencing blocks off a weedy area with trash cans in front of a ruined brick wall that was once part of the Shawmut Congregational Church (built 1864). The church was gutted by fire in 1978. Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción purchased the church and developed it into affordable homeownership condominiums and ground-floor commercial space. The housing was called Taino Tower after the Taino, the native inhabitants of Puerto Rico. The first condos went up for sale in 1991.
