Despite lying adjacent to a bustling port, West Chop remained heavily forested until the early 1900s. The photograph (May 2, 1948) shows the first substantial deforestation by the peculiarly rectangular fairways of the Mink Meadows Golf Course, newer fairways (subsequently abandoned), the electrical right-of-way from Woods Hole (wide light-colored line), and buildings extending south from the West Chop Club along Vineyard Sound and the harbor. The sole road is Franklin Street although Old Lighthouse Road, and other ancient ways are visible.
