With a climate that varies strongly with elevation and latitude, the vegetation in New England transitions from hardwood trees in the south to mixed hardwoods, white pine, and hemlock centrally, to spruce, fir, and northern hardwoods in the far north and at higher elevations. Although depicted as pitch pine and oak, the sandy southeastern coast supports much oak and other hardwood species.
