Wind roses for Martha’s Vineyard illustrate the seasonally complex nature of the wind environment. Each circle is broken into the twelve major wind directions, with the length of each slice representing the frequency of annual wind from that direction (total equals 100 percent) and the colors representing wind speed. In summer (July) the winds are generally gentle and overwhelmingly from the southwest. In contrast, winter (January) winds shift to a predominant northwestern direction and are stronger from all directions. In fall, winter, and spring, the most intense winds come from the northeast to southeast.
