Built in 1849, Holyoke's wooden dam was the first river-spanning structure to harness the Connecticut River for its power-generating potential. In the background is a misty view of South Hadley and the Holyoke Range. The caption on the photograph lists the name of the photographer, his place of business (Howard Street) in Holyoke,and the date of the production of this print. Another print of this image carries the date 1888.
