Edward Needles assures William Lloyd Garrison that although the progress of the abolitionist cause may "appear to be very slow", he is possessed of a "holy confidence" that their work will be completed faster than they may expect, pointing to the rise of abolitionist and temperance belief within the religious community at large as a sign of their labor's progress.
