Letter from Samuel May, Boston, to Richard Davis Webb, October 5, 1856
Description:
May tells about his tour through Ohio. He describes Cincinnati and Newport, Kentucky and reports that he met the family of William Shreve Bailey in Newport. May discusses dates for sending donations for the Anti-Slavery Fair from Great Britain. He says that he will send a book entitled, "The United States Constitution and its Proslavery Compromise." May tells of the travels of the Weston family and of Edmund Quincy's letters in "The New York Tribune." He criticizes Webb's argument against disunion and argues strongly in favor of it. May says that Mrs. Wendell Phillips is a confirmed invalid. He mentions Harriet Beecher Stowe's visit to England and states that he thinks Colonel John Charles FreĢmont may win the Presidential election.
