Letter from Michael Anagnos to Capt. Keller, May 13, 1888
Description:
May 13th My dear Capt. Keller, As dear little Helen, accompanied by her mother and her teacher, will soon start for the north, I write to renew the cordial invitation, which I had the pleasure of giving to them viva voce last March, and to say that they will receive a hearty welcome under our humble roof. On their arrival here they will be my guests until the preparation for the commencement exercises of our school are over. After that occasion, they will spend about a fortnight or three weeks at the kindergarten in Roxbury, where Helen will have an opportunity to join the little children in several of their daily occupations both in the schoolroom and in the gymnasium and to learn some of their ways. Towards the latter part of June they will come back to South Boston and stay with me until they are ready to go to Brewster. This is the programme for the summer: but I earnestly hope and trust, that, in making your plans, you will take into serious consideration Helen's special needs and allow her and her teacher to remain here during the autumn. The child must not be confined to a mere routine of instruction. She must have all of the advantages which she can derive from the equipment of a school, from the best appliances for illustration and from the association with other children. Moreover, her teacher must be posted on the simplest and most approved methods of instruction. My love for Helen and my sincere and deep interest in her welfare prompt me to ask you to arrange for her to remain here next autumn. I need hardly say, that both she and her teacher will be entirely welcome to the hospitalities of the institution as long as they may stay in Boston. Believe me, my dear Capt. Keller, with kindest regards to Mrs. Keller and much love to dear Helen and her teacher, Sincerely your friend, M. Anagnos. Capt. Arthur H. Keller Tuscumbia, Alabama
