- Bunker Hill Monument looking east
- Description:
-
Bunker Hill Monument looking east. Old North Church in right background and #7 Monument Square (with cupola) erected 1848 by the Hon. G. Washington Warren, first Mayor of Charlestown, 1847-1850, later state senator and judge of local court for 25 years. Next house to the right was built 1847 by Peter Hubbell, senior warden of St. John's Church for 23 years, who came here for New York soon after the completion of Charlestown branch railroad in 1843 to develop brick works near Fresh Pond end of the road. (Sawyer, pp. 413-414.) House to left (#8) was built in 1848 by Mr. Lynde A. Huntington. (Sawyer, pp. 44) House on right of Monument appears to be #1 Monument Sq., now St. Mary's Rectory, which was built in 1850 and occupied by George B. Neal, Treas. of Chas'n Gas Co. Mr. Neal served St. John's Episcopal Church as organist, beginning in 1842, as clerk of the vestry for 34 years beginning in 1849, and as Treasurer for 27 years, beginning in 1875 -- a total of sixty-one years of active leadership in that parish.
