- Description:
-
Oliver Holden organ and portrait. Given to the Bostonian Society by the will of his granddaughter, Mrs. Fannie A. Tyler, in 1889. Oliver Holden was born in Shirley, Mass., in 1765, and came to Charlestown in 1788, where he lived until his death at the age of 79. Mr. Holden gave the land at what is now the corner of High and Pearl Streets for the first Baptist church in Charlestown. A few years later he founded and served as preacher to another religious society which was called the Puritan Church, and continued for fourteen years. He erected a one-story wooden edifice on High Street opposite the head of Wood Street. Its front is shaded by an ancient and wide spreading elm tree. The society was small, but composed of highly respected citizens. They observed the sacrament of the Lord's Supper every Sunday and referred to the Bible as the test of all that was necessary in religious or civil government. Mr. Holden was a carpenter and joiner by trade, but a skilled musician and composer who published and edited many musical works.
