Letter from George H. Hibbert, Pigeon Cove, Mass., to William Lloyd Garrison, March 26th 1879
Description:
George H. Hibbert informs William Lloyd Garrison that he recieved the package concerning the "Chinese question", and has returned it to Garrison. Hibbert states that he was engaged in a debate wherein he argued for the "Christian side" of the "Declaration of Independence", but states that the audience voted against his arguments. Hibbert laments that "once again the oppression of a race finds defenders & apologists". Hibbert writes that on the Temperance question, there has been "retrogression" since the introduction of the License Law, claiming that it has "demoralized the public conscience" in a similar fashion as the Fugitive Slave Act.
