Robert Aitken, the sculptor, did a portrait bust of George Bellows in 1908. (Bellows) / Robert Ingersoll Aitken (1878-1949) did an 18 1/2 inch portrait bust of George Bellows in 1908. It is illustrated as the frontispiece of Charles H. Morgan's biography of Bellows...It is one of the few likenesses done of Bellows before be became bald. Aitken, whose reputation had been established at the San Francisco International Exposition in 1915, by his sculpture "Fountain of the Earth, Survival of the Fittest," which was considered modem and daring in theme, was also responsible for the long frieze of figures on the front of the Columbus Gallery of Fine Art. Later Aitken was to win a commission for a major sculpture for the American Telephone Telegraph Company Building in New York. (Mason)

- Notes (object):
-
In the artist's record book this is called the first stone. In her catalogue, Emma Bellows reversed the order. Both versions of the portrait of the sculptor Robert Aitken are masculine and rugged, yet they are also elegant. (Mason)
