The novitiate
Item Information
- Title:
- The novitiate
- Description:
-
Observed on a New York street. (Bellows) / The characters of three nuns once impressed me in the Pennsylvania railroad station as I passed through. I don't know why this drawing is further than this. -GB Although Bellows was raised as a Methodist and was married to a Christian Scientist of strong conviction, he himself was not a religious man. Notwithstanding the absence of formal religion in his own life, Bellows was interested in the demeanor of the three young novices in this lithograph, and depicted them with the utmost respect. When the lithograph appeared in "The Masses," February 1917, it was titled 'The Novice."
