Under a broad round arch, a dark passageway, paved with large stones and roofed with heavy beams, leads through a building to an opening, under a flat arch, on a canal. In front of the building are three slender trees with spreading foliage, and at the right four men are seated about a table. Through the archway gondolas are seen, on one of which a man is seated. The removed canopy of a gondola rests upon the pavement at the right, near the opening of the canal. In the outer wall there are two windows at the right of the arch and there is one window at the left.

There are touches of new work in the archway, on the carafe, and on the hat of the man at the left of the table. Two of the irregular white spaces in the archway, below and at left of the lamp, are covered with lines (Mrs. Bayard Thayer).
