Letter from John Humphrey Noyes, Ithaca, [New York], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1838 May 10th
Description:
John Humphrey Noyes writes to William Lloyd Garrison asking him to publish his acknowledgement claiming he is the author of the "Battle Axe letter." Noyes says that "several other mistakes have been made by the public" about the letter, and he answers them in a numbered list. He says that the letter was sent to David Harrison, not Theophilus Ransom Gates, and it was not intended for the public, explaining how it came to be first published. Noyes argues that his ideas are all taken from the Bible and claims "if it can be shown that I have written anything which is not by plain implication contained in that chapter I consent to be called a liar and a blasphemer." In the postscript, Noyes criticizes the "New Haven subscriber" who stated [in the Liberator of May 4, 1838] that the Battle Axe letter "was designed to be attributed to Mr. [James] Boyle."
