Description:
C.C. Burleigh writes to Samuel May saying he is "puzzled" about how to respond to May's last letter concerning "the 29th & 30th." Burleigh says he had already made plans to travel to New York on the 27th and he is not sure if he will be back in time to attend meetings in Blackstone or Lexington. He offers to take a different, faster boat to get there earlier and tells May, "if you think it worth while to advertise one [meeting] with a distinct perhaps, for one or other of the places named, or if you think my certain presence ... is worth the additional expense of the line boat over the propeller, you may announce me with or without the perhaps accordingly ..." Burleigh also tells May that he will probably not be able to attend the Independence Day celebrations at Abington but states, "There will be speakers in plenty there & I should doubtless be more useful somewhere else, where they are less abundant." He also states that he expects to be able to attend conventions for the following Sundays and discusses compensation, describing the time and cost that traveling to various conventions would require. Burleigh says he will "give an exact account of my expenses ... & leave it you & the Committee which has charge of the business, to determine what under all the circumstances it is right that I should receive."
