Letter from Edmund Quincy, Dedham, [Massachusetts], to Samuel May, [18]42 July 13
Description:
Edmund Quincy writes to Samuel May informing him that he cannot accept May's "kind invitation to address the people of Leicester on the 1st of August." Quincy says he is "just recovering from an attack of Measles" and he does not believe he "could apply my best faculties to its proper accomplishment ..." Still, he is glad that the people of Leicester are celebrating the anniversary of emancipation in the British West Indies, remarking "Nothing can enhance the moral splendor of the spectacle of a nation oppressed for centuries, transformed in a moment from chattels to men ..." Quincy also discusses publishing The Non-Resistant, stating that while "there are subscribers enough to sustain it, if they would pay their dues," he does not "regard its continuance now as of so much importance as during past years."
