Letter from John Pringle Nichol, Observatory, Glasgow, [Scotland], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1856 Feb[ruary] 27th
Description:
John Pringle Nichol writes to William Lloyd Garrison discussing an article about a meeting of the British Association, copied from the Edgefield Advertiser, which appeared in the Liberator of February 8th. Nichol says that while the article "merely offers the opinion of the writer" he needs to correct a mistatement "in reference to myself that I am not willing to permit to circulate among your readers unaccompanied by my decisive contradiction." Nichol argues that a remark made by Sir John Ross at the meeting was delivered in a "low and rather indistinct way" and that he did not reply to it "partly because I did not in the least understand what he meant ..." He then asks Garrison to send a copy of this letter to the Edgefield Advertiser so they can copy his remarks. Nichol also tells Garrison that "we have had much pleasure in seeing and frequently hearing from your excellent fellow laborer, Mr. [Parker] Pillsbury."
