James Kirke Paulding, the United States Secretary of the Navy, writes to William Lloyd Garrison acknowleding that Garrison's "letter for the discharge of your brother [James Holley Garrison] from on board the Rec[eivin]g Ship Columbus at Boston has been received." Paulding states that Commodore Downe will examine the case "and if found to correspond with your statement he is authorised [sic] to release him provided he is not in debt to the U[nited] States."
