Letter from Jonathan Edward Woodbridge, Worcester, [Massachusetts], to Amos Augustus Phelps, 1837 Dec[ember] 14
Description:
Jonathan Edwards Woodbridge writes to Amos A. Phelps regarding statements concerning his personal connection with slavery. He writes, "I never owned but one slave unless a child born of this woman while she belonged to me he reckoned another and who was about 2 years old I went with the mother when I disproved of her. The circumstances under which I purchased her was peculiar & if I am to see you will state to you orally." He copies a previous letter written to Mr. Earl stating Phelps' inquiry into Woodbridge's connection with slaveholding.
