Letter from S. Alfred Steinthal, Manchester, [England], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1869 Jan[uary] 23rd
Description:
S. Alfred Steinthal writes this letter introducing his friend "Mr. C. Gordon of Belfast" to William Lloyd Garrison. Steinthal is sure that "with or without letters of Introduction, a stranger would always find a cordial welcome at your hands" but he could not "let him cross the Atlantic without bearing messages of love to you and yours from me and mine." He then discusses the recent election of Ulysses S. Grant as President, saying he "earnestly hope[s] that President Grant may initiate a better and juster rule, than the States have been in during the sad presidency of Mr. Johnson." Steinthal also asks Garrison to assist Mr. Gordon while he is visiting. In the postscript, he tells Garrison some news of friends in England and remarks that the United Kingdom "Alliance prospects are brighter than ever."
