Letter from Gerrit Smith, Peterboro, [New York], to William Lloyd Garrison, [18]63 June 14
Description:
Gerrit Smith writes to William Lloyd Garrison discussing the latest edition of the Liberator. Smith remarks, "How judiciously & ably Mr. [L.A.] Sawyer writes!" and praises a published speech by John S. Rock. He then discusses a speech of his published in this issue "about which so much has been said" and points out a printing error that used "Theodore Parker's speech of 'party hating' instead of 'hearty hating.'" In the postscript, Smith comments that "fugitive slaves are still returned from Washington!" and calls the Republican party "a very cowardly and mean one."
