First Immigrants For New Jewish State Arrive At Haifa-Barge tender loaded with Jewish immigrants approaches dock at Haifa, Israel, May 15. Immigrants, numbering 300, were first to arrive after proclamation of the new Jewish state. They came from Genoa, Italy, on ship Argentina and possessed British visas under the old quota system that ceased to exist as British mandate ended. They were issued new entry permits by the new state.
