This issue of Mosaic contains autobiographical accounts, essays, journal entries, photographs, poems, and letters by students at South Boston High School. Each section begins with a cartoon by Alix Young and the issue is divided into six parts. Part 1, titled 'Grandparents, secrets,' features stories about learning new things about one’s grandparents. Tania Mason talks about understanding her grandmother’s mental problems and her strange behavior. Melanie Cooper writes about how her cousin is not technically related to her, and how that doesn’t matter to her. Christina Anthopoulas tells a story about her grandfather being punished by Germans for not disclosing the location of escaped Jewish prisoners. Rosa Sosa writes about regretting not knowing more about her great grandfather’s past, and how her family never talked about his World War II experiences while he was alive. Part 2, titled 'Fire and water,' involves stories pertaining to these elements. Bridgette Brown writes about fire, and how it lacks its own smell. Tammy Lambright describes a fire in her apartment and the aftermath. Maria Cabral tells a story about learning to carry a heavy pail of water on her head from her aunt while living in Cape Verde. Rang Yuon writes about playing with matches with his cousin in Cambodia, and how that was the last time he ever played with him before coming to the United States. He also writes about being forced to work in Cambodia and the murder of his father along with the sympathy he felt towards other children attempting to escape war by coming to the United States. Part 3, titled 'Alone in the woods,' contains stories about loneliness in an unfamiliar place. Maria Cabral tells the story of her family leaving Cape Verde to come to the United States, her reaction to riding in an airplane, and the shock of being in such an unfamiliar place. Ram Ry talks about living alone in the woods in Cambodia. Maggie Gregario writes about her late father and her desire to know more about him. Part 4, titled 'Voices around me, voices inside,' explores how one views one's self. Marcellus Blanding talks about what he sees when he looks in the mirror. Brown writes a stream of consciousness piece. Pat writes about how her friend Val confided in her about painful memories. Part 5, titled 'Chasing evil away,' contains stories about confronting evil. Pat writes about being molested by her uncle. Daniel Lugo writes about being chased by bulls with his friends in Puerto Rico. Ly Sao tells a story about joining their brother in standing up to a man who was threatening their mother. Cabral writes about encouraging pigeons to defecate on passersby. Part 6, titled 'Gifts, stories,' features stories about self-motivation. Vera Buckner writes about several times she felt depressed and fought with family. Cabral writes about getting rejected from a few colleges, and thinking of how she will keep moving forward.
