Lizzie opens her letter with apologies for not writing Louisa sooner. She then mentions the dreadful news of Abraham Lincoln's assassination and the ensuing commotion. She thinks they should now prepare for the "opening of the sixth seal" as foreshadowed by Revelations. Lizzie gives updates on Maggie and Will and their teaching positions and she states how she wishes a "worthy, whole souled-man" would carry her away to California to live with him, but she will not tempt her fate. She gives health and relationship updates on various people including those who have died, and she denies that she is going to marry anyone anytime soon.
