Saw, Ice
Item Information
- Title:
- Saw, Ice
- Description:
-
Large and heavy horse drawn ice cutter, plow type. The saw has six metal teeth (five cutting teeth), which are notched, of different widths. The teeth are attached by bolts to a long piece of metal, which was probably painted white. A maker's mark is stamped on the largest tooth. The metal has two sets of two small rings running lengthwise with the teeth, which have metal bolts or pegs in them. There is a larger ring at the top end of the blade, which has a rope tied to it. At the end of the rope is a metal hook. On the other end are two wooden handles, attached to the blade by multiple pieces of metal. One of the handles is broken right above the metal reinforcing bar connecting the two handles. The wood is a light gray color, and one of the handles may have been painted red. There is also a wooden case for the blade. The case is made of three pieces of wood nailed together: two long pieces that go around the blade, and a small piece seperating the others at one end. There are some small pieces of leather which may have served as handles. The wood was painted red. The maker and model information is written on both sides, and says "THE ICE KING --- WM. T. WOOD & CO MANUF.RS OF ICE TOOLS ARLINGTON, MASS --- 10 IN" Matches Ice King No. D, shown in 1903-1904 catalog: https://archive.org/details/WTWoodCatalogue1903/page/n15/mode/2up?view=theater In the Wm. T. Wood & Co. 1901-1902 catalog, a 10in plow with 6 teeth is listed as weighing 125lbs, including case. Diagrams and text explain that the front tooth is blunt and not used in cutting, and is therefore not counted in the number. A 7in, 5 tooth Ice King with swing guide is 115lbs, with the swing guide appearing to weigh 35lbs. Plows listed in catalog are between 100 and 135lbs.
