Kalambaka (which means "powerful fortress" in Turkish) lies in the valley of the Pineiós River and contains 18 of the 24 monasteries built by ascetic monks in Metéora and its surrounding areas. These monasteries are also protected by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.
