This lantern slide shows the lyrics to the S. E. Burrow hymn “Let Not Thy Hands Be Slack,” the title of which refers to the biblical passage Zephaniah 3:16. In 1910, the YMCA used the title as their motto. S. E. Burrow was an evangelist who served as the General Secretary of the British Soldiers’ Christian Association. According to “A Gateway to Empire,” an article by V. W. Helen, Burrow was to make “an extended visit to India to organize Associations in the forty-one military centres, touching en route at Gibraltar and Aden.” (Association Men, vol. 32, no. 1, October 1906). Little else is known about him.
