Ray "Rock" Hanson was born October 5, 1895. Ray held the role of "player-coach" for football and basketball in his last 2 years of high school; leading the basketball team to a Minnesota State championship in his senior year. In World War I he served with the Second Marine Division. During his time at Springfield College (Class of 1925), he studied under Knute Rockne, who remained a supporter and friend throughout his life. In 1926 he became the he began his coaching and teaching career at Western Illinois State College, where he remained for over five decades. During World War II he headed the athletic and morale programs for the marines on the west coast and in the Pacific area.
