Notes by Edward Hitchcock discussing Bernard Jean Bettelheim's experience as a missionary in the Lew Chew Islands (now known as the Ryukyu Islands). Hitchcock discusses the islands and their population, and goes on to describe Bettelheim's difficulties on the islands, explaining that the rulers refuse to see him, no one goes in the streets when Bettelheim is there, and he has been unable to convert any of the locals to Christianity.
