The connection between this Jewish Center, the Australian forces in World War I, and Springfield College (then known as the International Y.M.C.A. Training School) appears to be Harold Boas (1883-1980), an Australian architect, community planner, and Jewish community leader. During World War I, he served with the Australian branch of the Y.M.C.A., and in 1919 he published “The Australian YMCA: With the Jewish solider of the Australian Imperial Force, Together with a General Survey of the Operations of the Australian Jewish Chaplaincy Department and the English Jewish War Services” (Garden City Press Printers Letchworth, London, England). The inscription in the book reads, “To my friend Leslie Judd in remembrance of 'old times.'” Leslie Judd, who was born in Brisbane, Australia, was Head Coach of the Gymnastics team at Springfield College, and was a pioneer in the development of the modern gymnastic movement. This slide is part of Springfield College’s collection of lantern slides depicting Australian Y.M.C.A. war work during World War I.
Text on border reads, "Aust. Y.M.C.A. Hist. Rec. Sect.; Jewish Centre London."
