Tufts-Smith-Adams Collection

or
Dr. Cotton Tufts (1732-1815) was a Harvard graduate who had a medical practice in Weymouth. Two of Dr. Tufts’ grandchildren, Quincy (1791-1872) and Susannah (1797-1877), were the founders and benefactors of the Tufts Library, currently the main branch of the Weymouth Public Libraries. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Tufts served in various governmental and political positions. Of particular note is that he was entrusted with sole care of John and Abigail Adams' private affairs during their time abroad between 1780 and 1788, and again handled the local affairs for the couple during Adams' presidency.
