Detail from: For men only
or
A collection of press photographs assembled by researchers at Radcliffe’s Schlesinger Library, who were allied with the Cambridge-based feminist activist Betsy Warrior. Pulled directly from the working photo files of major urban newspapers, primarily papers in Boston, and covering the years from 1922-1991, the collection encompasses a diverse range of photographs featuring women in various contexts, including criminal and legal cases, sports, politics, social activism, and personal stories. The photographs capture significant moments in the lives of women, including individual and collective achievements as well as the challenges women face in navigating societal expectations and gender roles, sexism and discrimination, and domestic and sexual violence.

Please be aware that some of the content of this collection is troubling and includes disturbing images and evidence of violent acts. This collection is shared as a resource on the history of the coverage of women and gender issues in the daily press. However, we recognize that many of the photographs contain harmful content. We continue to work to present and describe these photographs in a sensitive and equitable way.

For further information, please see the Digital Commonwealth Statement on Offensive and Harmful Content. If you have questions or comments about images, language, or other content you consider offensive, or if you have questions or comments about our policies, please contact us at arts@bpl.org.

Critical funding to support long-term preservation of and enhanced public access to Boston Public Library collections, including this one, was provided by the Associates of the Boston Public Library.
