<mods:abstract>2-2 New England topography showing Martha’s Vineyard on the mostly submerged coastal plain. Inland, the highlands comprising the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Maine and the Green Mountains of Vermont are separated by the narrow Connecticut River that occupies a broad valley in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Further west the massive highlands of the Adirondacks, Catskills, and highland regions of New Jersey and Pennsylvania are separated from New England by the Champlain and Hudson valleys and bisected by the Mohawk Valley.</mods:abstract>
