Description on verso: Operator is standing at housing of chain mechanism used to lower and raise crossing gates. Grade crossing gates and track switches and signal controls were all manually operated. Levers (like the one on which operator has his right hand) had to be thrown into different positions to lock and unlock switches, to open and close switches to guide the trains on their proper tracks, and to change the position of the signals that told the train's engineers to go, stop and what track he was going to travel on. Some of these levers that controlled signals long distances from the tower by means of long pipes mounted on rollers, took a mighty heave to manipulate.
