He gave the land on which the present Main Library now stands and also gave $4,500 for the new building. He came to Watertown in 1854 and engaged in country produce until 1859 when he turned to manufacture and sail of coal oils. He was a selectman from 1877 to 1879. He represented Watertown and Belmont in the Great and General Court in 1881 and 1882.
