Colored postcard with the Grant School in the background and Civil War cannons in the foreground. The monument cost $3, 600, dedicated Oct. 1, 1889. Constructed from fine-grained granite, the Soldiers? Monument stands at over 21 feet. The figure of the Civil War soldier is positioned with his right foot slightly advanced and his gun resting on the ground. His right hand rests on his cartridge box. The face of the pedestal contains the inscription, "In Honor of the Men of Watertown who Fought For the Preservation of the Union." The monument was designed and constructed by the Hallowell Granite Company of central Maine. Other eminent works of the firm include the sphinx located at Mt Auburn Cemetery and the National Monument to the Forefathers in Plymouth. This statue?s twin stands in Castine, ME and a larger version was acquired by the town of Beverly MA. The two cannon located in the area have been identified as 32 pound Navy guns constructed by the South Boston company Cyrus Alger in 1849. No records of their service history have been found.
