Caption: File number: 205480 Released: Jan. 18, 1945 DEATH FLEES THE CATWALK: NAVY PILOT ESCAPES FROM FLAMING PLANE - In a spectacular crash landing aboard the USS ENTERPRISE, caused when the tail hook of a Grumman HELLCAT caught a wire on a waveoff after a bad approach, pilot Ensign Byron Johnson of Potter, Neb., was aided out of his burning plane by Lt. Walter Chewning, Jr., USNR, of Philadelphia, Pa. Tripped by its hook, the plane veered over and nosed into the catwalk as Ensign Johnson attempted to give it the gun upon his return to the carrier after a flight over the Pacific. The impact stunned him, and quick action by Lt. Chewning saved him from death or serious burns when the auxiliary belly tank ruptured and burst into flames. Lt. Chewning was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for the action. In this photograph, second of the series, the HELLCAT is caught on the wire and dragged to the deck dangerously near to the catwalk. (NOTE: See file numbers: 205741, 205743, 205474, 205749.)
