<mods:abstract>Samuel May, Jr. writes William Lloyd Garrison thanking him for the copy of the "Independant" sent the previous week, which May reports having received the night before. May states that he read Garrison's article on Mr. Pitman's "profoundly wise" speech delivered at the Temperance Convention, and informs Garrison that he was "much pleased with the piece". May states that he has wished greatly to see Garrison, and discuss Oliver Johnson's recent remarriage, of which May admits he knows little, as he states that such matters are more appropriately broached in conversation rather than correspondence. May states that his mother will be returning to town following having spent the summer in the country, and adds that she fares "pretty well, though increasingly feeble". May proclaims his wish that both Garrison and Helen Garrison were "greatly improved in health".</mods:abstract>
