Title from item.
This ship was the second of four Coast Guard cutters to bear the name TAMPA. The first TAMPA built in 1912, tragically was sunk by a German U-Boat in 1918 with the loss of all on-board - 131 souls. The 240 foot CGC TAMPA shown here was built in 1921 and homeported in Boston while conducting patrols for the International Ice Patrol off Newfoundland. During WWII, it was assigned to convoy escort and to the historic Greenland Patrol. The cutter was decommissioned in 1946. A later image (Aug 1929) of this vessel is at the Boston Public Library and viewable in the Digital Commonwealth collection. (Accession number 08_06_005887)
