<mods:abstract>May was very pleased by Dr. Joseph Hutton's remarks about Henry Clay's "hypocritical" emancipation scheme. He tells Estlin that the copy of "The Bristol Mirror" containing an account of the execution of Sarah Harriet Thomas arrived and that William Lloyd Garrison planned to publish the entire article in "The Liberator." May asserts his opposition to the death penalty and references the case of Washington Goode. May then discusses Russell Carpenter, whom he hopes will not follow the example of William Hincks when he journeys to America. May reports that Captain Daniel Drayton was found guilty of illegally transporting slaves. He mentions the mobbing of William Charles Macready at the Astor Place Opera House in New York City. May tells Estlin that he met the Misses Griffiths before discussing William Wells Brown's plans to visit England and various anti-slavery meetings. He explains the presence of Henry Clarke Wright's unpopular letters in "The Liberator" and mentions William Jay's "A Review of the Causes and Consequences of the Mexican War." May clarifies his view of the character of Dr. Snell of North Brookfield and mentions the death of one of Garrison's children.</mods:abstract>
