A petition written by the members of the light infantry company for the town of Limington, Maine on October 31, 1795 to Governor Samuel Adams of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The petition requested that another light infantry company should be formed due to the fact that the size of the present company was unwieldy. The petition is signed by the members of the light infantry company. Until 1819, Maine was under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and was called the District of Maine.

To his Excellency Samuel Adams Esquire Governour & Commander in chief of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts the [?] Humbly Showeth that the company of militia in the Town of Limington contains one hundred & forty four effective Privates, and it being in some degree unweildy in its present Supernumerary State, And your Petitioners [?] to acquire a more thorough knowledge in the military [crossed out words - if being] than can be obtained by the ordinary method for military instruction and being exited by other motives which they think will tend to the improvement, [?] and respectability of the Military force in this town - have after mature deliberation on the subject, thought best to Petition your Excellency to place such orders, as shall Effect an immediate seperation from s'd company and that we may be organized as a Company of Light Infantry to be raised by voluntary Enlistment and that Lieutanant Daniel Small of s'd Company may be authorized to Enroll, & superintend the organization of s'd company of volunteers - and your Petitioners as in duty Bound will ever pray Limington, York County, 31st October, 1795 David Hasty {?} Josiah Morten Henry Small David Nason Rufus Sibler Elias Fross Ebenezer Walker Enoch Staple daniel Small Enoch Nash James Staple Harve Libby James Nasen Elisha Morten Abraham O.
