<mods:abstract>Barroom owned by James Matthews which operated from 1879-1910, in Market Square, fronting Acushnet Avenue, New Bedford, MA. Wooden clapboard structure on corner, 3-story stone building at left. Caption on back: ITS MEMORY LINGERS -- One of two bar rooms fronting Acushnet avenue and what used to be Market square. They formed portals, so to speak, of the old police station, which stood in the rear of the court. The one shown here belonged to James Matthews and stood from about 1879 until some 20 years ago. Its site is now occupied by the present police station.</mods:abstract>
